Jack, my playful, whiny, and center of attention English Bulldog passed away this morning...2 days before we where going to pick him up.
He was perfectly fine until this morning, he was eating but started chocking, so the breeder pulled the food out of his mouth and was "slinging" him (what you do to newborn puppies), but it just kept falling out of his mouth - so they rushed him to the vet, but the vet said it was too late....it was lodged all the way in the back of his throat and no matter what it wouldn't have been able to be removed. I loved him, but I'm just glad this didn't happen after we took him home and I was attached to him like you would be with a dog that you've had for years. But, this wasn't the first time that he had chocked on his food - I have a feeling it would have occurred more than once if he survived.

The good news, we originally where going to get this GORGEOUS female she had a white face and little patches on it but we decided to go with the male (Jack) because I didn't want to deal with the bleeding from a female (yes, we are keeping her intact and showing her) and I just prefer males to females (as you can tell my only female animals are my mice.) Anyways, they tried everything to sell her, the breeders kids where begging to keep her, I really did want her but I was attached to Jack and I knew a male would be better for me. Any who, when she called me this morning she said that she still hadn't sold her and that if we wanted her we could have her (she said we don't have to pay the extra 300 for her, because her females are $1800). I guess everything works out for a reason and that's why they never sold her because He was watching from upstairs.

We are naming her Lyla, what my name would have been for a female.
Funny thing though, we already bought Jack his collar, leash, toys, etc. so it looks like Lyla will be wearing blue until she grows out of it.

RIP lil buddy.
Tell Bama, Rouge, Delilah, and Daisy hi for me.

I am so very sorry to hear about baby Jack, how horrible.
Congrats on getting Lyla, hoping she is all you dreamed of her to be.
Best wishes and good luck.

Sorry for the loss of the puppy. Did he have a congenital problem, or is this a problem with English bulldogs?

So sorry!

All things happen for a reason, and you must have been meant to have that little girl. When we were picking up our golden pup, there were 2 girls born in the litter to pick from. One of the girls had a common congential problem that was found a couple days before we were to choose the pup and she had to be put to sleep, leaving us with the only girl left. Which I feel we were meant to get her.

Awww, poor little Jack. How sad that he passed away so early in his life and so suddenly.

I'm curious if it could have been caused by genetics as well--I know bulldogs have other genetic issues/abnormalities so it wouldn't surprise me. Regardless, it's very sad.

I'm glad at least you will have Lyla, though.

Thanks everyone!

English Bulldog's are known to be very food greedy, but I didn't ask if he scarfed it down (which I am sure he did) - so he could have just been eating to fast or it could have been a congenital problem. Either way I am glad if it was, it was caught earlier - but, it's still upsetting that he didn't live very long and had to go in an awful way. So far, he has been the only one to choke on anything - when he was about 5 weeks old I gave him a treat that was about the size of my pinky nail and he spit half of it up and chocked on the other half, luckily I was able to get it out of him.
I figured, of course only my puppy. lol.

For our female we will keep her dry food slightly moist until she's a little older and put in one of those little balls (don't know what they are called) in her food so that she won't eat so quickly and so we can keep an eye on her if she has the same problem.
But, her show name is going to be is going to be dedicated to Jack - I haven't decided what yet though.
