We lost a hen today...
She was a strange bird, although sweet. She was the leader of the flock and sometimes acted more rooster than hen. She never slept in the coop, always wanted to sleep perched on the table or chairs on the deck. I wonder if this is what eventually killed her. This past week we had a very bad storm. I liven the midwest US so it is tornado season. Well I woke up at one AM to the storm and tornado sirens. The first thing I checked was the deck. Sure enough, she was on the edge of the table holding on for dear life through 60 MPH winds and rain. I grabbed her and ran her out to the coop, and she seemed ok, although wet the next morning.
I noticed she was missing this morning when I went to pick some stuff out of the garden and sure enough, she was under the deck, legs straight up in the air. She was still soft so she had died recently. Comb and mouth were gray blue, muscled tone was fine, no egg binding, even had air in her as I expelled it while I was checking her out. She seemed perfectly normal, except for the fact that her comb was blue and she was, well, dead.
Any Ideas as to why she may have died?
The rest of the flock is fine, didn't take long to figure out a new "leader", and boy is she a pecker (literally). She came after me as if she had spurs when I went out to feed and water tonight. Testing her limits with me, I think, lol.

This is Merry, sitting on "her" table. So long girlie.
