We received 25 one day-old chicks last week from Cackle Hatchery. 3rd time we have used them over the past 15 years, and as usual they arrived perfectly healthy, with none sickly or DOA. We have a 6 foot by 4 foot brooder, so there should be tons of room. This is the first time we have ordered any RIR's. About the 4th day, we started have a picking problem with one of the RIR's. I had to segregate one poor little barred rock pullet in a little pet carrier to heal. He was picking on her especially. She has recovered fine, and is back in with everybody else. I changed the heat lamp out from a white bulb to a red one but last night or early this morning, he ( I would assume he is a roo, and a mean one at that) must have picked out a new victim. Everything was fine when I left for wade fishing about 5:30 am. My son and daughter were off to work by the time I returned at about 8:00. I caught him picking hard at one of our Buff Orpingtons. He attacked the vent area really hard, just like on the barred rock. To make our too long story short, I got some BlueKote to put on the babies, and found him a little while ago trying to pick the vent at yet another chick. He is now the one isolated in pet carrier prison, so I hope everybody else is safe.

My question since we never had RIR's before- does he just have a "mean gene", or should I expect it from the other four we have of his breed? He came out of a straight run of 5, but none of the others seem to have any problem getting along.

RIR's can be pretty aggressive. It sounds like this guy is really over the top. I have a RIR hen that has to stay separate from the other hens because she might really kill one of my BO's. You could give him another chick that he's ok with and just keep them on their own. I assume he'll be dinner in a few weeks anyway.

I got RIRs because I had heard they were one of the friendliest breeds...mine are 2 1/2 weeks...so far so good lol hope they don't turn mean! Did I hear wrong?

well...I heard they were friendly to people.....BUT my chicks at 3 days old all ganged up on our duckling..(poor little duck...and he's so friendly)

I've been considering the same thing with one of my Golden Sex-Links. If she doesn't straighten up when they are put out in the coop, she'll probably be pretty tasty on our plates.

Thanks for the replies everybody! My Charles Manson RIR has been in solitary for a few hours, and not seeming to be as aggressive as before. Like I said, he is just one of a straight run of five, and two more look a lot like him. I put just a light streak of blue from a magic marker on one wing for identification purposes, and released him into the general population. So far, so good. No harm to him, I hope? And if I need to incarcerate him again, at what age will a leg band for ID be appropriate?

I had a month of hell with my SLW chick. I wrote a story on her that was published in a local newspaper. It was called "Poppy-A Problem Chick". I had to isolate her for a full month. The good news is she turned into a really nice hen. Not as tame as the others but not a "pecker"! Good luck. I know how upsetting it is when this happens and how hard it is to cull a little one.
