I bought this chick today as a hen but i'm a bit worried now. she's about 4/5 weeks, the seller wasn't too sure... i'd be really upset if she turned out to be a rooster.. :'( Thanks for help!

your welcome. and im not an expert but have had a lot of chickens so there is a possibility i am wrong, this is just what im getting from the pictures.

yeah thanks, i'm pretty sure he's a boy too.. Will take him back tomorrow as I don't want to get too attached to him if I'm gonna have to take him back later to be dispatched ); sucks to be a male chicken!

That's a hard one, I think he/she could go either way. Looking like a cockerel though. Btw, he/she is a Production Red not a RIR.

Thanks for the reply, oh ok thanks! Just out of interest how can you tell? Is a production red a sort of hybrid?

Production Reds are a hatcheries mix of a variety of breeds, most likely RIR, New Hampshire, and Red sex-link. Production Reds are a red color, but have light under feathers that show through. They often have a few solid white feathers. True RIR are a very solid dark red, almost black in color.

Thanks Peeka52 and wantbantams (:
Some photos taken in a more natural light, decided to keep her a bit longer as still not totally convinced she's a he.
