Hi Everyone! I have 9 hens and a rooster that were "wild" in my NJ neighborhood. My parents delivered 4 six month old RIR. They explained these were bred to lay eggs only. No mother instinct. They are so mean to my original chickens. They pecked a couple of the original chicks to death. The RIR's had fertilized eggs from my, I think, Americauna rooster. Turns out, every golden chick that hatches acts normal for a couple days then dies. 4 dead so far. Heart breaking. Any advice? Is it possible these RIR are genetically altered and have passed along a defect that their chicks aren't meant to live? Thanks in advance.

Bred for laying eggs sounds more like production reds and i have these, their eggs hatch out just fine but sence the production red is a cross their chicks usually have a different look than the parents.'I say you got something wrong in the brooder .
