Hello,

I hatched 12 RIR chicks last Monday (1-31-11). Today, I noticed that some of them have wings with all light colored wing feathers, and some have darker wing feathers. Can anyone tell me why? Can they be sexed by this trait?

Thanks

Where did you get the parent stock?
They look like Production Red chicks and not a true Rhode Island Red Chicks.

I purchased 24 eggs from a breeder that raises RIRs. I got them pretty cheap, since this was a trial run (first time to incubate). I was told that they were RIR, but I did not see his hens/roosters. Do the wing colors mean anything (sex) if they are production reds?

Thanks

my RIR chicks are all a little different in coloring but all turn out dark red as adults. All I can say is wait and see
