RIR cockerel question.

I don't know if there is a typical age but, I would say they crow before 4-5 mos. of age. Some very precocious ones crow in the brooder box. Others are older and don't crow because they are in the presence of an alpha rooster who might thrash them. If you are concerned with gender, you may want to post photos at "what breed or gender is this?

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Most cockerels begin crowing from 4-5 months but on rare occasions, they can crow as early as 2 months, and occasional cockerels are considerably longer than 5 months before crowing. The very rare cockerel can take almost a year before it crows. Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

Hi,

It's nice to have you here. How old is your RIR cockerel? We've had RIR's in our mixed flock but girls only...nice birds.

Thanks for joining us!

I asked my guy to only get 4 RIR chicks for us, hoping for 2 or 3 hens. Well!!! He decided he'd go ahead and get 6. But 10 came home with him.

. Watching them over the months, I judged that we had 5 males and 5 females, but thought that I would know for certain very soon as they would start crowing. Again I say WELL!!! The girls started laying at precisely 5 months. But you know how life goes. When when you want a males cooperation..............................

. Now I am not new to chickens. Just new to RIR. I have no other roosters.
