We have three RIR gals that started laying about 3 weeks ago and have been laying regularly ever since. Their eggs are getting a bit larger each week, and now we're suddenly finding one speckled egg each morning. The shell is the same lovely rosy tan, but the speckles are a darker brown. Is this normal? I've never read that RIRs lay speckled eggs - it's not blood, is it? I think the eggs are really pretty, I'm just a little concerned that this may be actually caused by a problem for the chicken, since she' a new layer (I'm wondering if it's something like tearing inside her due to the increasing egg size - I'm new to chickens, so I have no idea). Does anyone know?
