The long, thin, pointy feathers near the base of the tail are male saddle feathers. Only males will develop feathers that look like that. RIR pullets would not start developing and turning red in the comb until they were about 14 to 18 weeks old. These guys look like they have been red for a while.these three RIR are 16 weeks old. The bird up front in this one is definitely a rooster. He has pointed, thin saddle feathers.
