Help! So, due to my ignorance, Ive been under the impression that it did not matter if my RIR was a rooster or a hen when I bred to a barred rock to get a black sexlink. NOW that they're hatching.. ive been doing research and it is supposed to be a RIR roo with a Barred Rock hen... The chicks I have hatching are from a RIR hen and Barred Rock rooster. Can anyone tell me what these are going to turn out to be or look like? I appreciate the help. Thanks.

They'll all be barred, both males and females, but the barring will be less distinct and clean than with barred rocks themselves. The chicks will not be sex links, meaning you won't be able to tell the males from the females until they're older.
Thank you so much!!

I'm in the same boat. We have a Barred Rock Rooster and a mix of hens that were given to us. Breeds for the hens are Barnevelder, Black Austrolorp, and Buff Orpington. Everything I see refers to the barred rock being the hen not the rooster. Just hatched our first chicks. 5 of 6 eggs so far. They all look the same except some have a spot on the back of their heads and others do not. Will these all be considered Barred Rocks?

No. You have to breed a Barred Rock to a Barred Rock to get Barred Rocks. Yours will all be crossbreds and will not be sexlinked.
