RIR hen or roo?

Hey everyone, my wife and I love eggs, so we thought we bought 3 RIR hens. They are about 9 weeks old. Can anyone tell if they are hens or roos?


Hana has a bigger tail.


McNugget also has a bigger tail


Lil Chickie has a smaller tail but its comb is reddish

Those look *considerably* younger than nine weeks old. I'd say closer to 4!

Too young for me to tell gender yet tho. So far so good.

Those photos are of 5 week old chicks. Too early to tell.

Yes, but someone will probably pop in and say they are 'production reds', which is what the hatchery 'RIR' are called here (among other things). They look like the hatchery RIR I had as chicks - too early for me to tell gender, but at 5 weeks it looks good. They'll start getting redder combs soon if they turn out to be boys.

I know this is an older post and you should know what they are now, but comparing these chicks to our 4-5 week old similar chicks, I'd say they are definitely pullets.
