I've had chickens for years and I've never seen a bird grow back molted feathers a completely different color...
I've seen them slowly change, SLOWLY lol!
My rir is growing in black feathers where she is molting. She is my only rir, so is this a thing that happens?
I find it so weird... cool looking... but weird.
She doesn't lay, had a reproductive infection last year and hasn't laid since. I'm worried she's going to exhibit male characteristics because of ovarian damage, but the Roos don't have that much black either.
Just curious if anyone had any thoughts.
This is the video.

She should wind up red again, I think.

I can't explain much about why this happens, just know it happens occasionally when they go through a deep molt. This is Charlotte, who was a fuzzy chocolate silkie. It was like she was turning into a smooth feathered nearly black bird. The light colors on her are from the sun.

She wound up a chocolate hen again. Fuzzy as she ever was. That's her on the left.

This is just my theory, and I can be totally off. :old :idunno
Since she stopped laying, her pigmentation production may have changed. Pigment factory inside hen produces pigment for egg color, as well as feather color.
I used pigment factory instead of pigment glands as a creative description.:frow
