I was given 6 hens and was told they are RIR's; one is a deep rich copper color and she is lowest in the pecking order yet biggest in size and most tame, she loves to be held; the other 5 are lighter in color with some varigation mostly at the tips of their feathers, they look like the pictures of the Red Sex Link, anyway to know for sure? Also is Red Comets another name for Red Sex Link?

Red comets is one variety of red sex links - it sounds as if you have sex links and perhaps a New Hampshire or production red.

There are lots of "brand names" for red sexlinks. I've heard golden comet and red star the most but there are others. It just depends on which breeding program they came from and what mix was used but it's the same basic idea of crossing a red male and white female. So, the ones with white mixed in would be sexlinks. The all red one is a production red (commonly labeled RIR or New Hampshire although unlikely to meet standard for either). They should keep you well supplied with eggs! :)
