In my opinion, you would KNOW if it was a roo by five months of age. The size of wattles doesn't always mean roo - some can get pretty large on a RIR. Check my hen out, for a perfect example!

She's all girl.

Either way, you'll know for sure within the next month!

I have some that look just like that and only two are crowing...there's one that is an obvious hen but I don't know if the other ones are crowing...I have one that has smaller plummage and waddles and they aren't red but yellowish and that one is crowing...man is it confusing-lol.

if the chickens feathers were shiny at 5 months you would be able to tell is it was a roo or hen.

roos have shiny feathers. so they are hens. YAY YOU!!!

The one in the front of the first pic is a hen. The one in the back looks like a cockerel in the making (the tail is different..curvy).

All 6 of my chickens are the same age(20wk) and I just found it odd the two RIR wattles and combs are HUGE compared to my BO and EEs. So I didnt know. I guess its one of those things..until it either crows or an egg pops outta its butt I wont know for sure.

I think that they look like hens. I have 16 RIR hens. Their combs and waddles are not all the same size. Some are much bigger then others, but they are all hens (I know this, because I have gotten an egg from each one of them). A roo, especially at this age should have "thicker" legs and a more "upright stance". I think that you will be getting eggs anytime now! Good Luck!

Can you look at the hackle feathers? In most breeds (except for "hen-feathered" ones like Sebrights), a roo's hackles will be pointed on the ends and a hen's will be rounded.
