Besides the darker coloration on the RIR, can anyone help me with some other identifying marks? I have three red hens in my flock, two were ID'd here as RSL, but one that I do not have a pic of is much darker and richer in color, and I wondered if she might be a RIR.

I always thought the RIR's were darker in color.. Isn't the red sex link a cross between a RIR and a BR?

RIR's are darker than RSL's. RSL's usually have a noticeable amount of white in them, too. RIR's on the other hand (I've only ever had hatchery quality, so this may not always be true) have some dark green tail feathers and accent feathers rather than white. I don't think you will ever see any white on an RIR.

My RIR rooster has beautiful green tail feathers! Looks like cornelis (cornflakes roo) Rooster! The RSL seem to have the lighter colered feathers esp. in the wing feathers.

I think the tail is a sure fire way to "tail." Sorry, had to do it.

My RIR ladies are dark.
