RIR with beak open most of the time today.

gjoyner - Thanks. I love all animals and hate to see anything suffer.

It seems she just doesn't feel good since she is not behaving the same as the other RIR or Dom. I need a chicken communicator so they can just tell me whats wrong.....

You're going to have to force it to eat and drink. Use a syringe without the needle, and let drops of water fall on the beak, or at the side of the beak. Don't put the syringe into the mouth and squirt!!!! You could kill it that way.

Offer favorite treats. Make a mash with their pellets and water, and see if it'll eat that.

Then we need to find out what is going on that is causing it to be so ill.

Hopefully this bump will catch other's attention, and get some more advice.

Changing homes means a difference in cocciodosis in the soil... potential problem.... Respiratory infection is secondary... i would treat with an antibiotic at least and feed a cocciodistat (sp).... Just can't be to sure...

It's been hot here lately. One of my hens got listless & wasn't much interested in eating. I put some vitamins, mineral & electrolytes in her water & gave to her by syringe. And I found something she is interested in eating--bugs! I've taken her out of the coop at night & brought her to the outside of the house where the porch light spotlights all the juicy night critters. She is very cooperative about eating them even if I'm still holding her & just lean her close to the bug. We call this game "Point-&-Cluck".

It has probably saved her life, as she was getting thin and listless.
