I'll tell ya what. I posted a month or 2 back asking everyone's favorite breed. I now have my own opinion. At least from within my flock of pullets...4 RIRs, 2 brahmas and 1 BSL. (All production and cockerels excluded). My Reds are wonderful. The least skittish, the most adventurous when free-ranging, most tolerant of all humans. Fluffer, my fave of faves, allows me to hold her and stroke her when not being held. She greets me regularly and often with one or two of the other reds. She even strolls round the yard with me. The brahmas are soooo skittish but my nasty hormonal cockerels didn't help that any either. (All are separated now). The BSL is just...there. No personality. Not very skittish. Not friendly. No chirps or clucks. Just...there. I am sure glad I insisted on finding some reds when we started out. Next spring we will add another breed or two but for now...SURE DO LOVE MY REDS!:love

Your brahmas are skittish but your RIR’s aren’t? That’s pretty rare

Aww my first hens were RIRs and brahmas the rir that we had was always so friendly and would walk right up to us and my brahma would also let me pet her and pick her up they both would follow me around the yard and loved attention my brahma even would let me holding her like a baby miss them so much

I must say my red girls were the ones for me too. Friendly but not overly so, assertive and adventurous. I loved em. So happy to know you enjoy them too.

I had a RIR a couple of years ago that would follow me everywhere! Her name was Sparkle Girl. She was very smart, too. There was this woman that used to work at my house who was scared of chickens and Sparkle Girl knew it. She would hide where the woman wouldn't see her when the woman would come to work. The woman would look around to see if there was any chickens around. When she didn't see any, she would get out of car to come into the house. After the woman would lock her car is when Sparkle Girl would come out of hiding and would chase her until the woman for in the house.
I also had a New Hampshire Red named Finger who had a very similar personality. She just didn't ever chase anybody. I had another RIR named Sparkles, but she wasn't as friendly as Sparkle Girl. She was more known for her eyes that seemed to be bugged out and getting bullied by her whole flock. She ended up growing white feathers on her neck from them. She was originally a rescue. I loved her, too.
