River sand

Hi all!

My chicks are 2 1/2 weeks old now and I got some river sand for them, for sand bathing and grit, because the grit mix from our local pet supply is still a bit too big. I put it in a little bowl and they instantly loved it. Unfortunately I had to take it out soon after because they were eating it like their usual food instead of playing in it. Do they know how much they need or would they totally over-eat if I leave it in?

I bought about a 2 gallon bag of granite grit from the local mill, they put it in their chicken scratch. Ran it thru a colander with 1/16" holes. Bagged the smaller stuff for the chicks and sprinkle some over a chunk of sod in the brooder during the second week.
