ROAD TRIP!!

BEBIES!

More pictures when we get to the hotel tonight. Meyer Hatchery was great, very nice people! We delayed our pick up to wait to see if there were any overhatchings, and successful chicken math happened. I have an adorable flock of six! We made a special travelling small brooder box, they are all in there and quiet now.

I can't wait to see more pictures of them!

Here are the four girls we originally ordered:
White marans

Buff Orpington:

I think this is the Speckled Sussex

And I think this is the Rhode Island Red:

And then there was chicken math. Much hoped for chicken math this time. We postponed our pick up in hopes of it, and they had us wait a little longer, and then were able to find overhatches for us! So here are our two bonus girls. I told the young lady at the hatchery that we were looking for standard size layers that were heat hardy, maybe australorp, barred rock, welsummer? She said she was fairly sure these were barred rock.

We have a tiny flock! And now we're going to collapse into sleep and in the morning drive the rest of the way home.

I had a set of 4 names planned. Now, do I keep those, and come up with a new pair of additional names for the Barred Rock girls? Or do I try to come up with a new set of 6 names?

This is a trip you will always remember. I'm a little jealous.

I'm so happy that chicken math happened for you. They do look like Barred Rocks. Here is my Barred Rock chick from earlier this year.

That is a tough one. How about just grabbing a duo for the new girls. Maybe Laverne and Shirley?

We've been driving for many hours. Now in Arkansas, getting closer to Texas. Lots of CHEEP CHEEP CHEEP from the back seat.

It'll be midnight or so when we get home. I've told the rest of the family that we'll want unloading help, and then we are going to do a formal unboxing, and introducing each chick to my daughter, and then she can put them in the main brooder.

She doesn't know that we were able to get the extra 2 girls. I posted pics last night on Facebook, but only of the 4 she is expecting. She hasn't been reading BYC for quite a while. We are so looking forward to the surprise!

I was commenting on the two barred rock chicks looking the same, and Miles suggested naming them Toby and May from the October Daye books by Seanan McGuire, which we love. So I think that settles the names.
