rolling in the dirt

So it is 80+ today and I brought the baby chickies (5 weeks old) outside. I have a play yard set up with a blanket over the top so I can keep them in and predators out.

They are loving it,pecking and scratching in the grass and dirt, but 2 or 3 of them are scratching up dirt and rolling over in it, like completely onto their backs.

What is that all about? It is almost like they are bathing. :-D

They're dust bathing!

When my chicks tried dust bathing, I thought they were having a heart attack. The first time they were outside, one of them keep hunkering down and falling to the side. I was a bit freaked out! She was just learning how to give herself a dust bath.

I know! They are acting like the were having seizures. :-D

I have 2 who seem to love to play in the sand like that too (my two Easter Eggers). My other two tend to try to get away from them when they do it.

I had mine find a bare spot in the lawn that they liked and dug it up to dust bath. That was a bad idea to let them do that becuase I don't think I will ever reclaim that spot and plant grass. They aren't gonna have any of that!
