I think I've decided to get a pair of roman tufted geese in the spring. Does anyone have any? I want something small and not intimidating for my first geese. I live on the edge of the city, on about 2 acres. Will this be a big enough area to keep a pair of small geese happy? I also would like a quieter goose, although if my rooster hasn't bothered anyone yet I don't think anyone will have a problem with a goose honking occasionally.

What about water? I have 2 kiddie pools for my ducks, will this be enough for the geese too? Does anyone have any problems with their geese not getting along with chickens? I was wanting to get a pair of black east indies from ideal too when I get my geese, could I brood them together or would they be better being brooded seperately? Are they as messy as ducks in the brooder? Thanks everyone, and Merry Christmas!

this means we will be ideal gosling buddies this spring

i plan on gettin an american buff, and a saddleback pomeranian.
and from what i have read if you brood them with ducks and bring them around your other poulty they will bond with them .
i plan to brood mine with a few calls.

We purchased two pairs of roman tufteds this past spring.

They are very well behaved, not at all intimidating. They are running with some largwer gesse at the moment, due to be separated shortly for breeding.

They also are running with ducks and chickens. No problems with anyone picking on anyone else so far.

We did have some goslings brood with some ducklings this past spring and did have some issues, I would brood them seperately if possible.

"are they as messy as ducks?" I don't think anything is as messy as ducks. They do come in a close second though.

Kiddie pools will be fine, they willl love them.

Enjoy................

I almost asked my mom for a pair of roman tuffed geese. But went with pilgrim eggs insted. I think their little tufs are SO cute!

I love Roman Tufteds, they're only second to my Sebastopols. They're very laid back and sweet.

As far as BEI's they're fliers so you'll have to keep them clipped.

Thanks everyone. I think they are what I am for sure getting then, they sound perfect. I can't wait for spring to hurry up and get here.

I like the pomeranians, buffs, and pilgrims too. The tufted's were the smallest quietest goose I could find though, and I love the blue eyes.

The tufted are docile which sometimes means they are bullied by ducks and chickens. they are very short legged and can't outrun the other birds. That doesn't mean they are quiet though besides raising the alarm like other geese at intruders they will also alarm if other poultry head in their direction. a short step is often needed to allow them to enter/leave a kiddy pool. I always had problems trying to brood geese with ducks the geese just grow so much faster that the ducks can have problems.
I never would even think of brooding banham ducks like Calls and Indies with geese it would be like raising puppies with young hippoes. Even if there is no intent the small are likely to get hurt.

I understand goosedragon's concern but I'll tell you that I have raised my Brown Chinese gander and my Roman Tufted goose with my Call ducks. They live in the same pen (a 30 x 40 ft pen) together. The two geese actually act like a protector of the Calls. We have never had a problem with the two hurting the Calls, stepping on them or anything. They've lived with them for 2 years now. They all eat together, sleep together, swim together. Its a very symbiotic relationship.

I think because we raised them together from the start (they were all hatched together) we never have had a problem.

By the time I get them I should have a broodie or 10, so I'll probably put the bei under a silkie and let her brood them, just in case. Loud is ok, just not obnoxiously loud. My midget white turkey hen can be a bit of a bully, chasing the chickens. Do you think I'll have a problem with her and the geese? She never messes with the ducks, she just doesn't like my white chickens for some reason and will chase them every now and then.

They are her buddies at night though, and all roost together, so I thought maybe it's just her version of playing with her friends.
My bigger kiddie pool has a slide and plastic steps inside of it. Should I put some sort of strips across the steps for traction? I can put cinder block steps leading to it, I tried last year but the ducks just hopped over the side. The smaller one is set in the ground to make it easier to access, but I can put a block in there if needed too.

Hi im new to this thread. I purchased what I want told was 3 toulouse goose eggs early this spring but when only 1 out of the 3 hatched it definately WAS NOT toulouse! I called the woman I got the eggs from and asked her what other geese she had and she replied with roman tufted! So flash ahead until now and this goose is pure white with an adorable little tuft and beautiful blue eyes. Can anyone tell me more about this breed as I adore "her" and is there a reason why it wont go in water and swim? She will go in the kiddie pool and wade around but if her feet dont touch bottom she freaks out and runs off. Also can this breed fly? I keep finding conflicting info so anyone with experience would be amazing!! Thanks!
