The detachable run is 4'X8' and the coop is 4' X '3, raised 2' off the ground. The space under the coop also adds 3' to the amount of ground space the girls have, technically making the run a length of 11'. There's a hinged door on either end for easy access, as well as a back hatch in the coop for gathering eggs and picking up hens. As you can see in the first pic, there's also a door with a pulley so we can close the girls in at night.

4 nesting boxes are on the inside. (currently using deep litter--- but didn't have any on our first night, so made do with crumpled newspaper as shown here)

Girlies seem rather happy!

Still need to add details-- perches and areas for dust baths. Will winterize later in the season, but not needed now.

This was our first coop and it cost us $110. We found the paint for $1 in the "returned paint" section at Home Depot! It would cost us much less if we were to do it again, as we know the ins and outs a bit better now. Also-- we were scrambling to get it built as my husband was leaving town for a month-long business trip and our chickens were (a surprise to us) scheduled to arrive in 24 hrs.

The whole shindig is rather lightweight, too, making it easy for two people to move around the yard.

First of all--- I accidentally reported you... so sorry... I thought I was replying to you... my screen cut off the "ort" so I just say the "Rep"....

Any way.

No- we did not buy plans. I drew them during my lunch hour and came home to my hubby with a list of materials we needed. I said...

"Baby, I'm not cooking dinner tonight--- we need to go to Home Depot because we're getting chickens tomorrow... and we're building a chicken coop. Tonight. Can you show me how to use your power saw?"

And so we built the coop that night! We stayed up until about 2 a.m., but it was so much fun.... like doing a science fair project at the very last minute... except without the risk of a bad grade.

Needless to say, he's a wonderful wonderful man.

And he didn't even notice that I brought home 4 hens instead 3!

Actually, he's just as excited about the hens as I am. We make a good team.
