As I begin this, my first post as a new chicken momma, the sweet - and sometimes boisterous - sounds of our first flock of, hopefully, all girls brings me a smile. Well, actually it’s our second flock. That’s another story - kinda funny but mostly NOT. I’ll share it sometime. It involves our first eleven hens and one rooster - which turned out to be eleven roosters and one hen. Yeah...very memorable. Needless to say, we won’t buy chickens from THAT feed and seed again. Oh, and they are no longer in business! Imagine THAT!

We became chicken parents yesterday afternoon. We have lived on five acres of beautiful land for thirty years. My husband and I are both retired school teachers who finally have the time for a chicken adventure, so...here we go again.
We brought fourteen little ones home yesterday afternoon. They include two each: Ameraucana, chocolate Orpington, barred rock, Isa brown, Sapphire splash, blue-laced gold Wyandotte, and starlight green egger. We are looking forward to enjoying the eggs and maybe getting a rooster - assuming one hasn’t already slipped into the flock - and hatching some chicks if all goes well. Mostly, we just want to enjoy them as additional pets on the property. My husband needs a hobby. He’s Santa Claus! Ok, full disclosure - he does the Santa “thing” for a major portion of the year now that he is fully retired. Parades and Christmas parties and in-home visits and community breakfasts with Santa keep him and his red suit “on the ready.” He works with a professional photography studio with a Santa set and all the trimmings. They travel to cities around the country from September through November and “capture the magic” of visits with Santa for children. He works with them from their home studio off and on throughout the rest of the year. I’ll be staying home with my baby girls while the celebrity-in-chief brings home some additional chicken-hobby money! We will be sharing our new “chicken fun-run” with our son and daughter and their families. The four grands are more excited than ever about visiting with Gammy and Pop! We have much to learn, so we will be tuning in regularly with questions for all you experts. Thanks for making this forum available for all of us.
