Our older Polish mix roo managed to get his feet caught in the chicken wire on the side of our outdoor coop - he just has to try to start stuff with the roo that's in there, and the coop is on stilts, about 18-24" high. My husband was on his way out and heard squawking and found the roo caught. We're not sure how long he was out there like that, but it shouldn't have been too long, because we'd been out there not more than a half hour before. It's in the low 40's.
He's freaked out and I think he damaged the tendons in one leg. It doesn't seem to be broken and there is reflex in the toes. When I press on the underside of the foot, his claws curl like they should, but the leg seems stretched or something. He can't really walk on it. He falls down.
I made him a bed of hay in a box on the floor of our indoor pen, inside the barn. I put water and scratch grains with corn right where he can get them without getting up. He's an oldie, so we'll put him down if he doesn't do well, but I hope he can perk up. I tried to give him some NutriDrench but he wouldn't open his beak.
Has anyone ever had a chicken with a leg injury that sounded like this? If so, was the bird able to recover?
