Hi All,

I am raising my first flock of chickens so hopefully my question is not to silly.

Anyhow, I have a BO roo that is about 6 months old. He knows I am the alpha
roo because when I go into the pen he makes sure to keep his distance away from
me and does not come near me.

But lately he is making this growling noise as he goes to the back of the pen
when I enter it. Is this a noise that all roo's make or is he mudering under
his breath at the fact that I am in the chicken pen.

What do other roo owners think?

thanks.

Roosters growl. It isn't always an agressive sound.

HOWEVER- if you hear him chambering a round, get out of there.

Ok, so roosters do growl. It is kind of funny. When I enter the pen he
makes this noise as he takes his position at the back of the pen
till I leave.

Kind of reminds me of when I ask my kids to do something and I get
a grumbling response from them.

So is this a submissive growl? right?

I wouldn't consider it the same type of growl that, say, a dog would make (aggresive). Um, but I wouldn't call it submissive, either. Mine will growl when he hears a strange noise, or sees the shadow of a bird over head. And sometimes just what seems like no reason at all. But, I have also never had the growl directed toward me... so be careful!
