I have an unknown breed of Roo, he started limping 2-3 days ago, I believe. I could not find any physical wound, both knees and hocks felt the same, nothing out of the norm. It's a worse limp than it was day 1.
Below is a picture of him and a link to a short video of him.

I'm calling him Country Roo, because he looks like all the tv and book Roosters I've seen/heard as a kid, lol.

Also have a question about metal feeders/waterers and meds. I found it somewhere long ago, can't find it again. When you mix Vitapak[yellow/orange powder] with water in a metal bowl, is that a NONO? I know other actual meds is a nono, but what about those vitamins? The water turned bright green!

Have you checked the bottom or his foot for a possible bumblefoot??? Scabby looking dark spot with possible swelling around it??? Sorry - I know nothing of meds and metal waterers...

Yea I did, both looked fine, some stuck feathers, nothing under them though. The way he walks is like his knee or hock is weak. But I have no idea how to fix that. I'll try some eggs and yogurt tomorrow..

I am bumping this because I have a 10 month old Polish Roo with the same problem! Nothing feels wrong to me either. Felt warm to the touch yesterday, gave some Duramycin-10 yesterday and today and no more warm, but limp is getting worse. Now it looks like he is losing control of his toes, he walks on them sometimes, but only with the foot on the bum leg. This has been an ongoing problem with my boy for 6 weeks-on again off again. I have been giving Poly-Vi-Sol daily and he got better for a week, still couldn't scratch in the dirt but looked real well, walking almost normal. Then he started limping again and it got bad fast. Discovered lice nits on him almost everywhere today-vent, chin, under wings, back and little red bugs crawling around too.

So, maybe mine is not getting enough nutrition b/c of the parasites ( his poop is green too) and that's causing vitamin deficiency and it's effecting his leg making it weak...wish I knew for sure.

I have seen that limp one time too many. It is up high at the hip joint under the wing. Get some soft rolled gauze and wrap it under the belly and under the wing just tight enough to give light support. If you can get some antibiotic - even better.

Good luck.

You are also going to want to limit his movement for 24 to 48 hours while he's wrapped. If you have a large cage you can put it inside the run. Be sure to give him food and water, and spike his water with a vitamin B tablet. it's water soluble so u cant really overdose. But if u put too much in he may not drink it.

Either way make sure he stays hydrated. The first few days are the most important.

What is the cause of the limp?? Vitamin deficiency? I have injectable vitamin b here...and duramycin and rooster booster and ViTal...

it's hard to be sure, but in my experience it has been from pressure on the back either from other chickens (as in Roo's breeding on top) or running into something, or if they free roam from a dog, or getting stuck... a million different ways.

I don't think it's a vitamin deficiency based on what I saw in your video. Adding the B vitamin to the water just helps build them up and helps them heal. You should get your vet to give you a little anti-biotic. They heal faster, and you reduce the risk of further infection. You can get penicillin at TS - but don't inject it. Just give 2CC's orally from a dropper for 2 or 3 days, twice a day. Small amount at a time, you don't want to drown him.

I had the same thing with a young roo I introduced to my flock. He got all excited with all the new ladies, I think he over did it with the girls. He limped alittle worse each day for about 4-5 days. He would hold is leg up, and limped when he put it down. I looked him over thoroughly each day and saw nothing. I kept an eye on him, and after 7-10 days he started to improve on his own. Not saying thats what your issue is, but unless you see something that happened to him,(i.e. injury, blister, thorn, etc.) they mend pretty good on thier own. . After watching your video, he almost seems to have a twist in it when he steps down on it. I still think I would wait awhile before acting further. Just my opinion. . Good luck

Sometimes they mend on their own and sometimes they don't. I had a roo that had a similar limp. He got an infection and 2 weeks later he died. Better to be safe than sorry IMO.
