Hi all! Long time reader, first time poster. Have had chickens over 8 years and still have 2 of them; Olivia an easter egger and Lilly, my cuckoo maran. 8 weeks ago I got 8 chicks and this one started crowing last friday, at 7 weeks! Is this possible? Do hens ever sound like that?

I hope I'm wrong because she is my favoite with her sweetness, beauty and heavily feathered legs and fluffy feet, which was very evident even at 3 days old. She was about 4 weeks in this pic and now has waddles and a larger comb (I will update photo) but is the smallest out of the 8 chicks. I got her at TSC, and the bin said she was a maran, though not the specific breed. Please help me identify her/him.

That is a cockerel. Sorry!

Unfortunately that is definitely a cockerel.

It always seems like the boys have the best personalities when they're chicks. So many people say "this chick is my favorite! I hope it's a girl!"

While hens can crow, they almost never start that young. 999 times out of a thousand if a bird is starting that young it's a cockerel.

Not to mention that very red and large comb for that age

Thank you all! I had all my fingers and toes crossed (big sad face here). Anyone out there have a home for him... I will deliver if possible. I live near Janesville; by the Wisconsin/Illinois border. Pretty please
