Hey everyone. I hope you can help me. I have an aggressive roo. When i go to get the eggs from the coop he will run inside and attack me. He seems to only do this to me and my girls. Please give me advice on how I can stop this behavior! Im afaid to retrieve my own eggs. And why is he doing this? Thanks for your responses in advance. And yes im a newby!!!

My rooster started attacking the kids (jumping at them and pecking the backs of their legs) and he tried to jump on me (I kicked him across the yard for that)... I'm not ready to put him in the stewpot just yet, so now we carry a stick when we go in with the chickens. He leaves us alone now. And we've never had to hit him.

He's doing it because he can and he's not too bright. At least, that's my theory about why some roosters attack the hand that feeds them. If a rooster is not intelligent enough to understand that you do not attack the human that brings you treats and food, that I am not a threat to him or his women, then he cannot live at my house. You may or may not be able to stop it by using some re-conditioning methods. I personally will not keep a rooster that makes me have to watch my back out in the yard.

My rooster started doing the same thing a couple of weeks ago. He was my baby, had always seemed to adore me and i could hold and snuggle him for as long as I wanted. One day he attacked me and wouldn't quit. I tried carrying him around, I tried holding him upside down. Finally I had to carry a rake to go in the yard. I was ready to have him dispatched when a lady took him off my hands (yes, I told her he has been being mean). I got to the point where I was too afraid of him and it just wasn't worth it to me.

Sorry, I know it is difficult.

ETA...the first part of Rooster-Red's instructions are what made me realize I had to get rid of him. If you are too scared of him, it just won't work, and I was terrified of him!!!

there are way too many friendly roosters out there that get killed because nobody wants them.. id just get a nice guy who needs a home and get rid of ur aggressive one... i had one that i hand raised that went like that,, turned out he was trying to mate me... wasnt actually trying to be mean.. but i kicked him a couple of times, and put him in a small cage away from others when he did that.. he was perfect ever since.. started eating out of my hands and stuff. but i dont have him anymore. i sold him... hope this helps

I tried 'reconditioning' and it didn't work for mine, but it's worth a shot.

Then when it didn't work and I realized that I was afraid to go in the yard/pen/coop, I put my foot down and said no, he's gotta go.

One thing that I didn't realize was how hard it seemed to be on my hens. Although he was mean and rough on them, they seemed to like the fact that he led them around. They paced every night for more than a month. They really want a roo around.

So here come the young ones... I got some babies and now have another couple of roos. IF they are nice to me and the gals, they stay, if not, they go.

My suggestion when there's a mean roo and there are children who could come in contact with him - is to put the roo in a pot - not the children (LOL)

Yep Ive tried the kicking method. He just seems to ony get more aggressive. Like a challenge. He doesnt bother my husband. Thats whats so funny. I will try entering with a stick or a rake and see what happens. Matter of a fact I dont have to enter the cage even . He will fly at me through the fence. Totally crazY!!!
