Got 6 chicks from the "red pullet" bin at Tractor store. Monday will be week 6. I think I got a Roo...blah. Chime in and let me know what you think. I'm noticing the comb turning red and the others aren't. Of course, I'm new to this so I'm hoping I'm wrong so I don't have to get rid of Dottie / Dan.

If its a Roo... at what age do I know for sure (when it crows?)

and how hard is it to get rid of him.

Don't roos have combs with 3 rows? This one only has 1 row. I had a girl that grew her comb redder and quicker than all the others. At 27 weeks, she's still the one with the brightest tallest comb.

The way I could tell when I had a roo was:

his comb had 3 rows,
he was considerably bigger than the rest,
his legs were thicker
his wings were darker than the the others of the same type,
oh, and he started crowing at about 8 weeks

The three rows are with a pea comb breed, I think. Straight comb breeds all have one row, pullet or roo. I do think that's a little roo, that's a lot of red this young.

Give it another week or two and there will be more "signs" The big comb is one, but watch the spurt of wattles as well. Yes, the stronger, longer legs, and eventually that rather upright, funny gate when he walks. Is he alert and holds his head up high? Yet another little sign. Does he try to act like the boss of his nursery school? Things like that.

yep... I'm thinking Roo also. Boss of the nursery, "manly" legs, walking kinda cockey with head up. Last night I spied on them all in the brooder and all the ones I'm pretty sure are hens were snuggle together in the corner and this one was laying just outside the others, a few inches away as if he was keeping guard over them.

Oh well... anyone near Covington Ga need a Roo?
