I bought a rooster last Saturday and he mated with my little hen several times this past week. He is now missing (maybe run in with dogs or ?), and now I don't know if the eggs she is laying are fertile. Are eggs fertilized one at a time or what? I would like to save them in case to see if I could get a chick from him - at least. Anyone have info - please advise - Thanks

They may or may not be fertile. I bought a yr old Barred Rock rooster back in Oct of last year. After the 30 day quarantine period, he joined the flock, so he's been with 10 hens since the end of November. I have no fertile eggs. I don't know if he is infertile (unlikely) or he is just very bad at getting it done correctly. If your rooster was fertile and mated the hen properly, the all the eggs will be fertile for at least two weeks and sometimes more then three weeks from just a mating or two. I myself have a 2 month old cockerel I hatched form another source who will take his place as the "fertilizer of eggs" around here upon maturity, unless my guy starts getting it right. Other than that, he's a wonderful rooster.
