Roof insulation and ceiling

Insulation not really needed.
I would put 1/2" hardware cloth on the underside of rafters to keep bird from roosting up there.
What kind of ventilation do you have...are soffits open?

That is a sweet looking setup!

The soffits have wire and are closed, im concerned becausr there are ridge vents over coop and run so my thought was to insulate roof rafters like walls except to put some kind of paper over instead of plywood so we see any animals or damage. The 1/2 inch wire on the ceiling of coop and sand areas but leave the shed area open for access. There will be a vent in the front. The front has three windows and two under the run side. Im more concerned with the roost area that nothing falls from rain or snow on them if the roof is compromised so perhaps put up plywood only over the roost with the wire underneath against rafters. The woods are right behind this

I tried to mix designs to make it safe for birds and my daughter, everyone has been so helpful here

Ridge vent is not going to let much in, usually has that fabric under to keep rain snow from blowing in.

Could you post some more pics, to better understand this:

My fear is that the ridge vent will make it easy for racoons or sqiurrels to lift up shingles and try to get in which would allow snow or rain to get in. I wasnt planning on ridge vents being put in

You WANT a ridge vent, it lets out the moisture and heat that rises. It is a good thing to have that. Shoot, wish my house had that
Still so jealous of your coop, so nice ! Oh and ridge vents are still nailed in, just like all other shingles.

I would not be worried about the eaves so long as they have wire on them. It will help to bring the air up to ridge vent and draw cooler air in for Summer. Not sure I would want it ALL wired, maybe boarded off with larger ovals of wire so air gets in but not too much during the Winter. Hope that makes sense.

There are 2 thought with roof insulation, insulate the roof or not.
For a house here in N.E. they say insulate the floor of the attic and not the underside of the roof. They make those thin foam U shaped boards for that. And I am not sure if this is the thought when you have a Ridge vent or not (I think it is?)
Not sure what to do about a coop.

yes, the soffits have 1/4 inch wire cloth and are closed -the gable vent will shortly be installed in the front and there are six windows that are huge. in the section that is for the chickens, I thought it would be best so that ammonia rises to put the 1/2 inch wire under the rafters at 8 feet and just put plywood over that above the roost area so that where the chickens are is protected in case something gets in (the 1/2 inch wire has to be put outside the windows still and the run finished before they can go in)

Beautiful coop! We built our coop this spring and I put foam board insulation on the sides but did not put any on the roof. I left the interior rafters exposed and just painted them.

So far, no regrets doing it this way. I figured it would help with not trapping heat inside when it's hot out but I expect the issue becomes keeping heat in during the winter so we'll see!
