Hi. New to keeping chickens. I have 5 pullets in a 15'x20' run. The fence around it is about 4 feet and even though they don't leave it NOW, should I add a roof over it, being that I have two dogs outside it? Or will they just retreat back to the run/coop if they get out and start getting chased around? -THANKS

Glad to have you here. I hope you find everything that you need to know. You should add the roof just to be on the safe side.

I was planning a corrugated plastic roof over my 10X20 run, things got complicated so I covered the top with wire for now. I have 4 five week old chicks. I have dogs who will chase/kill chickens so I used 4' panels to make a "buffer zone" across the front. This is so the dogs can't get right on the coop run fence and chase. If they don't get over stimulated it helps. Yesterday I was at my computer, looked out and a huge hawk was sitting in the tree in front of the run, scared the crap out of me...checking out the new buffet...Glad I have the top!!!!

We have a metal roof on top of our run, and it is great since the chickens don't like walking on snow in the winter. We also have a seperate unroofed section of the run, so they can get sunshine. In my experience, chased chickens often don't head back to the coop.
