How much of a roof overhang is adequate to prevent rain from getting in the coop through the small chicken door? Someone I know who has a coop said 36”. That seems excessive to me.

It's going to depend on how high your roof is above this door, and if it's angled etc. Our coop has a 3' overhang in front, but it has 6' headroom, so a driving rain will get in the small door and get the floor wet in that small area.

We put an extra small chicken door in the side of the coop where there is zero roof overhang....so my husband made a little hood just over the door, it's only about 5" wide, made from a fence picket. Rain doesn't really get in as far as I have seen. This pic is when it was brand new and blocked off to keep chicks inside...it's a bit gray and weathered now....
BTW, welcome to BYC!

Thanks for the reply and the welcome. The door is about 44” from the top of an A frame roof. I had the idea to have the chicken door slide up and down but if I have it slide left and right like you did I can put an overhang over the chicken door like you did. Thanks for the idea!
