roof suggestions? for a novice builder

Thank you 4season. What is the false rafter on the ends for? Looks? Or to keep the roof from flapping in the wind?

How much would one expect to spend for a piece of tin for the roof? I called around and couldn't get straight answer. They said forty dollar minimum plus $30 for any cut they have to make. But they had price per pound so I couldn't estimate. This other place said seventy. That seems like a lot to me.

Sounds like those quotes came from a specialty metal roofing place. Do you have a local salvage place in your area? In my area there is a places called Bargain Salvage, Knox Rail Salvage, and Halls Salvage that will sale you metal by the sheet if you want to go with the good stuff. Or just walk down the roofing isle of your Lowes, or Home Depot and see what they have in stock. You might like the look of 8 ft. Corrugated UT-Gauge Galvanized Steel Roof Panel for $10 a sheet, although it is very thin and harder to work with, would be cheaper than most other options.

Thanks for the detailed reply! I see that product on the Home Depot website but it isnt available in my area. Too bad. I will check around. Thanks again.

another question:

does anyone thing landscape timbers buried into the ground to use as posts for a chicken run would be a bad idea? or could I use treated 2x4s? they are about the same price $4 for 8 foot.

Just a way to cut the rafters so they can be flush with the top of the wall frame, Karen. There is some math involved which is a bit too much for me and my teeny first coop.

I attempted it with a 2x3 and a circular saw an it might be a candidate for America's funniest Home videos.
