What an awesome garden! You are truly an inspiration for me to get going with my garden again this coming spring. (Illness forced me to abondon it and I've get to start up again... no excuses now!).
Please DO post pics and keep us updated as you implement your chicken plan.
Oh boy! I really enjoyed membership in a CSA this summer and planted basically NO garden (inner city 50x100 lot) but looking at your raised beds makes my gears start turning. What a nice way to put the little chicks to work during the summer, sell the extras in the fall when they are ready to lay and keep your favorites for eggs over the winter. oooh, I wish my hubby was a handy man. Guess it's time for me to pull out the stops and start using the brain I got from my dad. Power tools, raised beds, here I come!
Great garden (at first I thought you were in Milwaukie Oregon HA) Chickens will fly, mine escape from behind 6 foot fencing. Please make sure they are enclosed!
I wish everyone thought like that, can you imagine what a wonderful place this country would be if everyone utilized space that effectively and tried to be more self-sufficient?
I hope to get my garden going next year...got some great compost coming though...got my chickens first! Got to prepare, you know....do I sound like a developing chicken addict now or what?
I wish all businesses would consider green roofing....what a contribution to society if people could do community gardens on rooftops of apartment buildings and offices. Just think how many people we could feed if we just got creative!!!
Wow, congrats to you and I hope that it works out for you to have some eggs to go with your veggies!!!
Thanks for all the positive feedback on the rooftop farm. Please spread the word so others can see the possibilities. It is also possible to modify pitched roofs to accomodate gardens. Detached garages are an especially good possibility--we installed one this spring on a garage with a flat roof. In whatever space you have or can find, plant (and breed) and grow a Victory Garden! With enough enthusiasm, we can make millions of new green and food producing spaces!
I just have to add my amazement - I live in a fairly "green" city and have never seen anything like this. I am going to be sharing this thread and your link with many people over the next few days and I am very excited to see how your chicken coop and run progress. It is not that difficult to build a totally enclosed run, we have one because of predators. Good Luck!!
