I am building my first coop. I'm using the Wichita Cabin Coop as a basis for mine. While I would love to install a metal roof, I was concerned about the cost. My awesome brother said that I can have about 5 leftover packs of shingles from when he was re-roofing his house. What is your opinion of metal roof vs. shingled roof?

When installed properly, metal roofs generally last longer than shingles.

If you are building a movable coop, shingles add a lot more weight to the structure.

Really a matter of your preference.

I LOVE metal roofs, they last forever and are easy to install on a basic, plain roof. Shingles just don't last, are a PITA to install (imo) and are HEAVY. You can cover alot of area with one sheet of metal, whereas one shingle covers what, maybe a square foot??? If you can possibly afford metal (try looking on craigslist for free or low-priced) by all means, do it!

Anyone every seen or used those plastic "slate" roofing tiles?
