I bought three hens a while back. They are bigger and growing fast! The farm I purchased them from pegged them (then) at 12 weeks old and predicted they would start laying eggs at about mid-march. I have yet to see an egg, which doesn't really worry me just yet, but now I have a question. Lately, as in about the last three weeks to a month, they have been much noisier. They spend a lot of time making this really long, drawn out chicken sound. Obviously hard to explain in writing, but phoenetically it's kind of like "Broaaaaaaaaaaaaa-aaahhhh-aaaahhhh". That was probably pointless.
Someone told me once when they were younger that when they started to make those long drawn out sounds that they were getting ready to lay. But like i said, this has been going on a long time now.
So, my question is, does that sound mean anything at all? Will they always make it? Or is it something that happens because they are getting ready to lay for the first time? Is it like chicken puberty or something?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
Joe
