I'm a brand new chicken Moma and loving every minute of it. Please don't laugh at this crazy question. :)
My little feathered family consists of 7 roos and 5 hens. Tonight, the roos were being very aggressive to the hens, and since they range in age from 4 to 5 months old, I'm guessing they're hormonal and simply doing what nature designed them to do.
My hens were done playing, so I separated them for the night. The roos went absolutely CRAZY! Crowing, flying into the chicken wire, flying on top of the coop . . . you name it! Eventually they calmed down and went to rest in their roosting area, but is this normal for the roos to be so upset? They have all been together since they hatched, but tonight was the first night they had such issues in getting along.

Thanks for your help!

Wait whaaaat?!

You may want to read up on male : female ratio for a healthy flock. Pick a roo or get about 50 more hens

:) My little family was hatched in my classroom in an incubator. Trust me, I did NOT choose this ratio. At the time, I was tickled pink that so many eggs hatched.
Tonight was pitiful. My little moma hen was pitiful and when I picked her up, the roo (Big-un) as his name implies was furious with me. I felt like we were playing whack-a-mole as we got them separated for the night.
I'm thinking it's time to "part the sea" and keep them safe.
When can I expect to see some eggs???

Thanks again!

Well now that a major source of daily stress is removed, you can start to expect eggs any day now. That many cockerels is not conducive to a harmonious and peaceful flock.

Thanks for your help! I'll let you know when the eggs start :)

At 4-5 months, hard to say when laying will commence...
.....could be another couple months.

Keep those boys separate until you get rid of them,
the girls will thank you and may reward you with eggs sooner rather than later.

Roo update . . . they survived overnight. :) They were still mad at me this morning, and my hens clearly wanted out. They usually free range all day. I see a definite change in my hens now that the roos are gone. As I stated earlier, they've been together since they left the incubator, but last night was a defining moment, or should I call it a hormonal moment. LOL
Thanks again for helping!!
