We live in a semi rural area. We're in the mountains, are on well and septic, but are lucky enough to have a grocery store 15 minutes away. All of the homes near us are on 2-6 acre plots. We chose ours because it was at the end of the street and secluded from everyone, but one whom I'm not to fond of. We're on 4 acres and back up to the above mentioned neighbor barely and a national forest.

I have 3 roos. A LF blue cochin, a bantam blue cochin, and a serama. My LF cochin and serama can be quite nosiy. They like to crow off and on throughout the day, while my bantam roo crows in the morning and every once in a while during the day. They're here so I can breed them. I've spent the better part of the year getting higher quality birds to use as breeders.

Well, yesterday the neighbor who I don't like came over to complain about my roos. He said their bothering everyone in the neighborhood . Because they crow all day long even when we're gone (I thought they just crowed when we were home).

So I on the one hand I want to be a good neighbor, but on the other hand we moved here so we could have animals (ordinances say I can). What should I do? I don't want to cause any problems, but I do want to raise birds to sell and for our family.

Thanks,
Sonja

Good question, I figure I have 4 roos out of 7 chickens and a friend has offered to take 2. I am actually hoping to keep one even though I didn't plan on it because we live on a half acre rural lot surrounded by other 1/2 acre lots. As far as I know I have the right to have roos but like you I don't want to make life miserable for my neighbours (or vice versa). You might try the bribe method of offering them eggs.....
hopefully someone else will have some good advice for you.

The simple fact is: You CAN have the roo's! If the neighbor dosent like to hear country noises..then maybe he needs to move into the city where they are not allowed?..Thats just my opinion... You pay your taxes just like him..

I am in a similar situation. I have owned my little farm for ten years now. Two years ago while the housing market was still hot, they put in a development all around my little farm. Now I am an island of rural county property, surrounded by tiny little 1/5 acre lots that were re-zoned to city. About half those houses are vacant now and have been foreclosed, but I still have quite a few neighbors along one side of my property. One side of my property butts up against ten of my neighbors backyards.

My roosters get loud sometimes. But land use laws where I live allow for me to have them. So let the neighbors complain all they want to, as long as you are being legal there is nothing they can do about it.

I tell my mean neighbor that he bought his home last year knowing his backyard borders me. I have lived here ten years farming. If he don't like it he can move.

Besides, I'd rather listen to my birds than to his barking, yippie dog.

Most of the other neighbors are kept happy with fresh eggs and garden bounty.

Good luck!

Why don't you go over there and politely tell him that if he doesn't like roosters, tough, and maybe he should invest in a pair of earmuffs. Or better yet, give him earplugs for christmas.

Thanks everyone! You've made me feel better. Yes, we live up here to get away from city living and we want quiet. Everything I've read says that I can have poultry and livestock, which we do. We're in an unincorporated area, so roos are fair game. Maybe my neighbor just needs to move to the snotty part of town and not live with the country folk

I was wondering if he really is speaking for all the neighbors or just took it upon himself to represent them.

I find that when I talk to people personally that sometimes opinions stated by one aren't always accurate of the whole.
You have a right to the roosters. But it's always nice to know how a community feels.
You can catch more flies with honey then you can with vinegar.

These neighbors are snotty, seriously they need to move to a covenant enforced area. Maybe I need to instill fear into them. The neighbors below us have dogs that bark constantly and no one goes down there because they're afraid they'll get shot. I don't mind their noise and it's not like htey keep deer and elk away!!
