Can someone give me - in a nutshell - what to look for to tell girl vs boy - my chicks are about 4 wks old now -I ordered all pullets, or picked from pullet bins at TSC - some of my mystery red 'pullets' are pretty assertive already - thanks

These are general traits, there are always exceptions to the rule:

Males:
-thicker legs
-bigger size
-larger reddening comb
-wattles starting to redden and grow
-upright posture
-slower feathering

Females:
-thinner legs
-smaller size
-small yellow comb (sometimes a little pink/fleshtone at base, but not much)
-wattles may be barely starting to show but shouldnt be pink, very small
-lower posture
-faster feathering

What breeds do you have, there may be breed specific characteristics as well

I have - 3 black Austalorps, 1 Delaware, 3 Easter Eggers, 3 Red Stars, 2 Dominiques, 2 Speckled Sussex, 3 white TSC 'pullets' - ?TetraTints, and 3 red TSC 'pullets - they are really the ones I'm concerned about - displaying the upright posture - I'll have to look at them more closely to check for other clues - thanks a lot.

When chicks are about 4 weeks old, I often start identifying the roos by making a noise like tapping on the side of the growout pen and watching the reactions: pullets will often put their heads down low, while the roos will jerk their heads up and look around in a protective stance.
Both pullets and roos will bump chests and kick at each other.
My big Red Leghorn/EE pullet is now a roo because he started to schreech today.

Thanks - that gives me a lot to go on - will cross fingers for not too many boys in there!
