Hello!
I have a few "stray" dogs in my neighborhood, and I can't find out who/if they belong to! I want let my chickens range every once in a while, and I heard that roosters can be a source of protection. True or False? I'm also open to any other protection ideas you guys have to offer!

A rooster may or may not sound an alarm (most will).

A rooster may or may not put himself in between your hens and the dog/whatever (some won't).

Remember if it is larger than him, he is likely not going to be much of a deterrent. If what comes around to do the damage is a pack of whatever, the rooster is going to be a minor speed bump to the attackers.

You can figure it out.

Honest answer would be a fence. We have a lot of strays out here and they are brutal. A rooster may try all he wants, but you end up burying a lot of birds. I very rarely free range anymore because of loose dogs. I could start shooting dogs, but that just leads to more taking their places in rural SC.
