I am new to chickens. This site has been a huge help in planning the set up and selecting our girls. For as much as I have learned about chickens in the past year, I still find myself with many questions. This is a great resource for answers.
I currently have 66 “pullets,” representing 20 different breeds. They are twelve weeks old now. I ordered from two different hatcheries to get the variety that I wanted. I amazed that I am able to distinguish most of the breeds, and some of the individuals among the breeds.
We live on a farm about an hour south of Chicago. We raise corn, soybeans, wheat, oats, and hay. We also have a horse boarding facility, a couple miniature donkeys, a Nigerian Dwarf Goat, 3 dogs, and 5 cats.
I go to school in the city, and I am amazed at what people do not know about agriculture. Or more appropriately, what they think they know. Chickens and eggs seem to be getting a lot of attention lately in the supermarkets, e.g. Organics, Cage Free, Free Range. I think it is important that people are informed consumers, regardless of what their values are. My venture into the chickens is not only educating me, but it is also opening up opportunity for discussion with others.
I also enjoy photography, and there is nothing quite like a chicken for an entertaining subject.
I will be posing questions from time to time, and hope that I am able to eventually answer some to help others.
