I built the chickens a roost today. I made a ladder but I wondered if it may be too steep for them. Do I just wait to see if they will use it or should I do something?

They probably don’t need the ladder-they can fly up quite easily. However a ramp would make it easier for them, and it looks fine to me! Great coop design!

Thank you. I will probably have to build another one, since this is only about 12 feet of roosting space but I thought I'd see if they seem to like it.

My only suggestion would be to place the "rungs" of the ladder a little bit closer to each other to avoid the chickens slipping. especially if you have pullets or young chickens. Other wise it looks great. :highfive:

No higher than that roost is, they don't need a ladder. Probably won't start using it until around 8 weeks or so. Do not be surprised to find one on that piece of wood high up in the eave corner.

Is that chicken wire on the front of the shed? If so, and if that is all that separates them from predators, they may not last long enough for you go find out!

BTW, what is your location.......at least approximately.....state or region of nothing else. Matters as to climate considerations.

I'm glad to hear that they age into using it. I had a temporary flimsy one in there that I just saw a few of them get on, occasionally, and thought that they just didn't like it. I'm glad I got the good one made for when they are ready. I thought about putting a longer piece of wood at the height of the corner piece, to allow more roosting room without crowding the floor space.

The chicken wire is just a partition inside the shed/coop. I didn't have the outside run built when I moved them into the coop so I needed a way to make sure they didn't get out the door as I came in and out.

I am in central Oklahoma, where the climate is bi-polar.

I built my roost bar about 2.5 feet up, in a 4 ft tall coop. Then I added two new chickens, and there was some discord, and the new ones found refuge all the way at the top eave. Last night I found them all 4 feet up, with no ladder to assist them. Chicks are 5 and 8 weeks old, BTW...
