I'm using 1/2" square dowel rods.
Is this suitable?

Also, is there a recommendation on how high off of the ground that they are?
Higher than the nesting boxes right?

A lot of people like to use the largest side of a 2 x 4 (lay it flat) for them to roost on, as they can cover their toes with feathers when it is cold. This helps to prevent frostbite on the toes.

If you have heavy breeds it is good to have the roosts not too high. Higher than nest boxes is important if you can swing it. I have generally been of the opinion that roosts 3 feet up were a bit too high for my heavy brown egglayers in the past, but you have to accomodate your coop design as well. If they are too high they are at risk for bumblefoot. Everyone has different ideas- you will find your perfect design.

1/2 inches is just a bit too small IMO. I would go with the 2 x 4s.

I hope this helps- enjoy your chickens!

Thank you for confirming my suspicion.
Once I saw them balancing on the 1/2" dowels I figured I'd better ask.
What is bumble foot and how does the height affect it?

You are welcome!

Bumblefoot can occur with repeated heavy landings, as it can nick open the feet and infection can set in. Generally you will see swelling and/or a black spot on the bottom of the foot. It can be from staph. bacteria. Also bumblefoot can occur with a foot injury on fencing, rocks, etc.

Bumblefoot can travel up the leg and kill the chicken if it gets bad enough.

I've been doing some reading on it today.
I'm seeing recommendations for 18" max roost height.
It also looks like regular foot inspections are recommended?
I'm trying to wrap my head around the idea of catching 30 chickens on a regular basis in order to look at their feet.

I don't handle my chickens unless I am dusting for mites or am giving medication, or cleaning out a nest box. At that time I take the opportunity to look them over.

But I do sit in a chair or stand about looking them over carefully every day without handling them - looking at feet, feathers, energy levels, poo on the ground, etc.

It is imperative to observe your flock closely to monitor their health. But no, I don't go catching them to just look at their feet.
