Without my vents and with the roof secured there is no way physically for the water to get inside, unless the whole thing blows away (and it will be secured to the ground, and the roof will be secured with marine bungee. Plastic does have an advantage over wood in at least this respect: water can not go straight through it, and there are no gaps whatsoever: it is straight thick molded plastic. I do not need to stand out in the rain to know that. With my new venting, if the wind blows in the direction of the vents, water will get in. If that becomes a problem I will replace the vents will pinhole radiator metal -- that will not allow water in as readily (right now it is 1/2 inch hardware fabric.)

But I was posting regarding the roost -- not about whether the coop is water tight.

So what is "too high". Also do I count how high from the next lowest level, or from the longest jump possible? Thanks as this is the kind of information I need.

How high I dont know depends what breed you have

For games I've had them as far as 8' or so but they fly good. I'm not experienced with layers but I know it couldn't be even close to that. Maybe someone experienced in layers will chime in.

That is not really true, unless they jump down onto something sharp enough to cut them...and then it gets infected.

So I think the thing to do is build a new coop by they time they are bigger, as this one clearly has a lot of issues. In the meantime this should be a nice place for the babies.

In light of that plan, at what age do they need a nice sized roost bar? Cause my dream coop will not be ready overnight. I will post another thread about designing that...

An ordinary 2x2 peice of lumber will be fine from chick through adulthood.
Although that will probably be wrong for some reason too
