I have two 4 foot high roosts and three 5 1/2 foot high roosts, both have ladders. Most of the birds use the ladders to get up but only a few use the ladders to descend. I have not had a problem, except for me banging my head on the 5 foot one. I think am going to lower it just so I don't give myself a concussion. My girls are on the smaller side though, the largest one being 6 pound Wyandotte cross.
Edit My floor is the 3/4 inch OSB pannels that are used under professional ice skating rinks. Got a really good deal on it and it's practically waterproof. I'm going to coat it with roofing paint next summer so I don't have to worry about it again for the next 5 years. I'm guessing there's about 4-5 inches of straw bedding.
