Roost height with regard to headroom

How much headroom do I need to give the chickens in their roost? In other words, how far from the cieling of the coop should the roost be at minimum? I have limited space so I am trying to maximize floorspace. Thanks

I like to have a couple feet minimum myself for large breeds.

In my tractor they have about 16-18" above the roost, which is just about adequate (they're sexlinks) but I sure would not give 'em less, and more might be kinder.
