What height should the roost be for 1 month old chickens? My babies are moving into their permanent coop tomorrow, and the adult roosts are 14 inches from the ground, which will be 11 inches once the bedding is on the floor. How high should the roosts be for my 1 month olds?

i got a shipment in February of baby chicks and they can jump over a foot, but i would recommended putting in some smaller temporary roosts just in case about 5-6" off the ground. also i would try getting chickens near the little ones but supervise it just in case but you should be good.

I would guess 6 to 8 inches. They may surprise you and go to the higher ones tho. It is their way to do that. I had roosts in my box from day one and also fed mine live greens from day one along with their chick starter, and boy did they gobble up those greens!

My roosts are at 48" ht and the poop boards under them are at 24" ht. They just hop up to the poop board and then hop up to the roost. All of my roosts are at the same 48" ht to avoid fighting. They routinely crowd up in one corner and leave big openings with no birds there at all!

This is the way we do it.
Permanent posts where we can adjust the height.
In our adult coops they are from 3-6 ft but are adjustable. We are building a new 30x100 coop now for 300 new layers. Permanent posts are set in in rows (the roost area) the rails will be adjustable as they grow. Eventually (for these breeds) the roost rails will be 3 and 4 ft heights, most at 4. Larger birds will roost on the lower rails, etc...
