Just wondering how high up a roost could be, and not need to supply the girls with a ladder to get up to them. I realize my roost should be higher than the nest boxes. So if my roosts are say 4 feet off the coop floor, will the girls be able to get up there with out a ladder? I plan on having a roost over the nesting boxes, so they can hop up there from the top of the nesting boxes. My main concern is the roosts that I'm going to place on the long wall. Thanks for the help

it depends on the breed if they will be able to get up 4 ft because smaller lighter breeds will easily fly up their but large ones like cochins couldn't get up their.

My girls are similar in weight to yours. My nest boxes and roosts are on opposite walls, but the roost is higher than the nest boxes. My droppings board is 30" from floor, lower roost 9 inches above that, upper roost 20 inches above the board. My girls have a ramp that they rarely, if ever, use. Most will fly up to lower roost then jump to upper roost.

Those breeds should be fine with a 4 foot roost, but I wouldn't go much higher since some can't really fly up too high (while others can fly over a 6 ft fence).

Sounds like what I kinda had in mind for mine....thank you. you have your upper and lower roosts staggered? And how big of a dropping board do you use?

I have different heights from which they can choose to roost. I guess the different heights act as a ladder. They jump up on a lower height and then jump back and forth until they reach the roost height they want or which is available. Don't underestimate their ability to simply jump/fly all the way to the top hieght.
