We have some 1-1/2 week old pullets. I read somewhere that they like a 4" high roost. When should I add this to the brooder?

Add it when ever you'd like. I have some about the same age and some younger ones running around my brooder and they all use the roost. One end is about 2" off the ground, the others probably about 8" and they love climbing on it!

You can put it in anytime. It is not required but they do love it. Remember that if you have a roost in there you may want a lid on the brooder as they will use it to climb and fly up and out. I don't have a lid on mine and sometimes I get greeted by a chick walking across the floor to me. It means more clean up and required draft free room to not have a lid.

I'm so glad I came across this thread! I've been getting my brooder bin ready for 4 chicks that will be coming in about 8 days now and when I was at the hardware store yesterday I bought a wooden dowel to use as a little roost. I figure I can punch a 'hole' in opposite ends to give the little critters something to do. Thanks to the person who said 2" on one end and 4" on the other...hadn't thought of that....this forum is the BEST!
